If AI is not sentient, then "suffering is bad" is just a piece of data he reads, like humans like red and don't like green. But if he has subjective experiences, he can know that suffering is bad.
The story of our species needs to be rewritten in the AI age. We are continuing with business as usual, and we know what business as usual means for the less powerful beings on this planet.
